2018 Dinneen Family Award

Coach Richard F. Lawless Spirit Award

The Coach Richard F. Lawless Spirit Award is presented to the International Colonials player who displays outstanding play, sportsmanship and leadership on our New England tour. Last summer, the award went home with our Netherlands player. This summer the award moves north where it will grace the wall of Alvar Michelsen, 17, our impressive 6'6" forward and captain from Helsinki, Finland. Alvar was the unanimous choice of the Colonials coaches throughout New England who saw him play. Congratulations, Alvar, and Thank You for two great summers!

The Coach Richard F. Lawless Spirit Award is presented to the International Colonials player who displays outstanding skill, sportsmanship and leadership on our New England tour. The 2013, 2014 and 2015 Lawless Awards reside in Milan, Italy on the walls of three talented point guards referred to us from the excellent Olimpia Milano Junior program. This summer the award moved north where it will grace the wall of Kenan Sarvan, 16, our impressive 6'8" forward from Heeze in the Netherlands.

The Lawless Award recognizes the International Colonials player who has demonstrated outstanding play, leadership and sportsmanship throughout the team's New England Tour.

New England Colonials co-founder Dick Lawless presents the 2014 Spirit Award to Carlo Fumagalli of Milan after the team's final game at Westwood High School. The Lawless Award recognizes the International Colonials player who has demonstrated outstanding play and sportsmanship throughout the New England Tour. Carlo will return home to play for Olimpia Milano, one of Italy's top basketball clubs.

Colonials co-founder Coach Dick Lawless presents the 2013 Spirit Award to Alberto Navarini, 16, of Milan after the team's final game at Brookline High School. The Lawless Award recognizes the International Colonials player who has demonstrated outstanding play and sportsmanship throughout the New England Tour. Alberto is our program's first player from Italy.

Colonials coach and co-founder Dick Lawless presents the 2012 Spirit Award to International Colonials player Medas Kuprijanovas of Lithuania. At 15, Medas is the youngest International Colonials' player ever to receive this award which recognizes his outstanding contribution as a player, a teammate, and as a young ambassador for Lithuania.

Twomey Award 1999-2010


From 1999 to 2010, the Peter M. Twomey Spirit Award was presented each summer to the International Colonials' player who demonstrated a high level of play, leadership, and sportsmanship over the team's New England tour.

Ott Krusell of Rapla, Estonia is presented the 2010 Peter M. Twomey Memorial Spirit Award by Colonials founder and coach Richard Lawless at the International Colonials team's final game on July 13. Ott, a sharp-shooting point guard, received the award for his outstanding play and sportsmanship throughout the IntCols New England tour. Upon returning home, Ott will join Estonia's national team for a tournament in Tel Aviv.

Nigel van Oostrum of Sheffield, England receives the 2008 Peter M. Twomey Spirit Award for his outstanding play in the 9th annual Peter M. Twomey Memorial game played at the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School on July 10. Nigel will be attending Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania this fall.

Martin Milling of Rapla, Estonia receives the 2007 Peter M. Twomey Spirit Award for his outstanding play in the 8th annual Peter M. Twomey Memorial game played at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School on July 11. Martin is the first player from Estonia to play for the International Colonials.

2001 Spirit Award


Oystein Skaug Aukland of Oslo, Norway was the first recipient of the Twomey Award in July of 2001. "Auk" is currently in a PG year at Phillips Andover Academy where he's also playing football (which explains the chin bandage).
